Detroit Handbell Ensemble

One of the midwest’s finest regional ensembles, the Detroit Handbell Ensemble was founded in 1991. Since that time the group has been featured in various venues including the opening concert for the July 2000 American Guild of English Handbell Ringers Directors Conference, a feature concert at the July 2003 National Convocation of the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. The ensemble has also recorded handbell demo CD’s for Lorenz, one of the major church music publishers in the U.S.A.
Artistic director Dr. Michael Burkhardt is well-known in the field of church music as a composer, choral clinician, and organ recitalist. His innovative and creative accomplishments have been used and appreciated by church musicians throughout the country.

University of Pittsburgh Men’s Glee Club

The Pitt Men’s Glee Club is the oldest extra-curricular organization at the University of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1890, it was the first collegiate musical ensemble to be organized at the university. An active and popular organization, the club toured Europe in 2010. They have several CD recordings to their credit, and more information can be found at their website, www.pittmensgleeclub.org.
Music Director Richard Teaster has conducted the group for ten years. During this time the group has grown in membership, and musicianship, placing them in the top ten of collegiate men’s choral ensembles in the nation. A singer as well as a conductor, Mr. Teaster has performed with Cincinnati Opera, Aspen Opera Theater, Pittsburgh Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera and others.

A contemporary masterpiece, Lux Aeterna was premiered in 1997 and received rave reviews. Called “lush, glowing, light-filled, calming and radiant, the work incorporates Latin texts from the Requiem Mass and the Te Deum. 20th century composer Morten Lauridsen was named an “American Choral Master” in 2006 by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Dennis Kratzer recently retired from Ohio Northern University as Director of Choral Activities for 36 years and four years in a similar capacity at Otterbein University. As a professor, his choirs toured throughout the US and Europe. He has sung with several symphonies in this country and abroad, and has appeared as guest conductor for the Toledo, Columbus, Perrysburg, ONU and Otterbein Symphony Orchestras. He was directly involved with Monroe Street's Palm Sunday concerts in 2009 and 2010.
